Native Americans developed more specialized methods of hunting. TheVore Bison Jump (pictured) is one of these important specialized sites where bison were stampeded into a natural sink-hole deep enough to kill or disable the large animals. Vore has at least 22 layers of bison bones ranging in age from 700 to 300 B.P. and contains the remains of at least 20,000 bison, thousands of arrowheads, and other stone tools. These mobile foragers exploited a diverse set of resources including large mammals like mammoths, mastodons, and bison from approximately 12,000 to 7,500 B.P. (years before present). One example of Paleoindian hunting is the Colby Mammoth Site, which includes the remains of at least seven mammoths, associated projectile points, and other stone and bone tools. The Archaic Period lasted from 7500 to about 1500 B.P. Prehistoric Native Americans diversified their diet to include more plant resources, while adapting their mobility patterns and landscape use for differing seasons, climates, and natural resources. Archaic period sites consist mostly of open camps, some residential structures, and evidence of grinding stones. Types of archaeological sites Not all archaeological sites are shown.
